Science Centre

The Science Centre in Port Blair is one of the best places in the city to bring children, and a pleasant surprise for adults too. Set in a green compound with a wide view of the sea, it combines hands-on science exhibits, galleries on the geology and nature of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and an open-air science park with dinosaur and aircraft displays. It is a relaxed, interactive stop that adds variety to a trip full of beaches and monuments.

The centre is on Corbyn’s Cove Road in the Shadipur area, a few kilometres from the middle of Port Blair, so it fits easily into a half-day that also includes the beach. This guide covers what you will see, how long to allow, how to reach it, the best time to visit and how to combine it with nearby sights. About the Science Centre

The Science Centre was set up in 2003 with the help of the National Council of Science Museums, a body under the Ministry of Culture. Its aim is to help the public, and especially students, understand basic science through interactive exhibits rather than lectures. In practice, this means plenty of buttons to press, models to turn and experiments to try.

The setting is one of its best features. The building sits on a green hillside with a wide view of the sea, and the compound includes a playground, so children can run around between galleries. It is a small centre, so you do not need a whole day, but it is a genuinely enjoyable stop that suits all ages.

What You Will See at the Science Centre

The main building has three galleries, and outside there is a science park. Exhibits are updated from time to time, but visitors usually see the following:

Area What You Can Learn
Andaman and Nicobar gallery How the islands formed, volcanic activity, ocean science and the natural history of the archipelago
Fun Science gallery Hands-on demonstrations of light, sound, magnetism, motion and other basic principles
Modern Science and Biotechnology gallery Introductions to modern science, technology and life sciences
Science Park Outdoor garden exhibits that explain basic science principles
Prehistoric park and dinosaurs Models that trace the story of evolution, including an outdoor Jurassic-themed area
Amphibious aircraft An aircraft on display that children can see up close
Playground Slides and swings for younger children

The Andaman and Nicobar gallery is especially useful for travellers. It explains why the islands look the way they do, from volcanoes to coral reefs, and it makes a good companion to the Samudrika Museum if you want to learn more about the marine side.

Sky Shows and Special Programmes

The centre has held special programmes over the years, including sky shows that describe planets and stars, 3D shows and science demonstrations. These are held on selected dates and may not be running during your visit, so ask before you plan around one.

Why Visit the Science Centre?

  • It is great for children. Interactive exhibits and a playground keep young visitors busy.
  • It teaches about the islands. The gallery on the islands’ origins is unique to the Andamans.
  • It is a comfortable break. Much of it is indoors, which helps on a hot or rainy day.
  • It has a good view. The grounds look out over the sea.
  • It is flexible. You can spend 45 minutes or 2 hours, depending on your group.

Visitor Information

How to Reach the Science Centre

The Science Centre is on Corbyn’s Cove Road, a short drive from central Port Blair, and it is well signposted. Cabs and autos are the easiest way to get there, and it is also close to the airport. If you are on one of our packages, your private cab will take you directly and wait while you visit.

Opening Days, Timings and Tickets

The centre usually opens during the day with a break, and it may be closed on one day each week or on public holidays. Tickets are generally modest, and students may get discounts or free entry with a valid ID. Because these details change, always confirm the current days, hours and entry rules before you go, or ask our team to check for you.

How Long to Allow

A quick walk-through takes about 45 minutes. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours if you want to try the exhibits properly, visit the science park and see a show.

Best Time to Visit

The centre can be visited throughout the year. Mornings are best for the outdoor science park, and the whole site works well in the heat of the day or when it is raining. For planning, see our guides to October, December and February weather.

Combine It with Other Port Blair Attractions

Because the centre is on Corbyn’s Cove Road, it fits neatly with beach and waterfront stops:

Attraction Why Pair It Approx. Time Needed
Corbyn’s Cove Beach The nearest beach, a short drive further along the road 1 to 2 hours
Japanese Bunker A relic of the Second World War occupation near the beach 20 to 30 minutes
Flag Point The Tricolour memorial and sea views on the same road 20 to 45 minutes
Cellular Jail The historic prison and evening Light and Sound Show 1.5 to 2 hours plus the show

Timings are approximate and vary with season and crowds.

Suggested Half-Day Plan

Time Plan
Morning Visit the Science Centre when it opens, starting with the outdoor park
Late morning Walk through the galleries and, if available, a show
Midday Short drive to Corbyn’s Cove for lunch and a swim
Evening Stop at Flag Point, then the Light and Sound Show at the Cellular Jail
