Flag Point in Port Blair, also known as Tiranga Point or Tiranga Park, is a short, meaningful stop that links the city’s present to one of the most important moments in its history. A tall national flag flies from a great pole above the sea, in memory of the day in December 1943 when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the Tricolour on Indian soil for the first time. It takes only a short time to visit, it is usually free and it gives you open views of the water and the city.
Flag Point lies a short drive from the centre of Port Blair, on the way between the waterfront and the beach road. During the Second World War, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were under Japanese occupation. On 30 December 1943, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose visited Port Blair and hoisted the national Tricolour for the first time on Indian soil, declaring the islands the first Indian territory to be freed from British rule. The hoisting took place at the Gymkhana Ground, which is now known as the Netaji Stadium.
Flag Point is a memorial set up in remembrance of that moment. Each year, on 30 December, official ceremonies are held here to mark the anniversary, with the Tricolour hoisted at the site. A tall flag pole was installed here to give the memorial a landmark that can be seen from far across the harbour. For more on the islands’ past, read our guide to the history of the Andaman Islands.
| Date | What Happened |
|---|---|
| 30 December 1943 | Netaji hoists the Tricolour at the Gymkhana Ground in Port Blair |
| Every 30 December | The anniversary is marked with ceremonies at Flag Point |
| Later years | A tall flag pole and memorial park are developed as a landmark |
This is a simplified summary. Please check details on site or with official sources.
The main sight is the huge national flag, flying from a very tall pole above the coast. Seeing it from the ground, with the sea behind it, is a stirring sight, especially in a breeze. It is easy to spot from different parts of the city, which gives a sense of how visible it is.
A small landscaped park surrounds the flag, with paths, benches and information about the history of the site. Take a few minutes to read the plaques and displays. They explain why this place matters and who is remembered here.
Because of its position near the coast, Flag Point offers open views over the water and across the harbour. On a clear day, the sea is bright blue and the horizon is wide, and the light is particularly pretty in the early morning and late afternoon.
Compared with busier sights, Flag Point is usually quiet. It is a good place to sit for a few minutes, take photographs and think about the story behind the memorial before moving on.
| Highlight | What It Is | Approx. Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Giant national flag | A tall flag pole visible across the harbour | 10 to 15 minutes |

| Sea view | Open views over the water | 10 to 15 minutes |
| Photography | Flag, sea and sky in soft light | 10 to 20 minutes |
Timings are approximate and vary with crowds and season.
