Laxmanpur Beach

Laxmanpur Beach is the sunset beach of Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) and one of the most beautiful places in the Andamans to watch the day end. On the island’s western coast, a long stretch of pale shell sand slopes into shallow water, with old fallen trees along the shore and an open sky above. It is quiet, wide and unhurried, and it makes a fitting end to a day on Neil. Right next door, the same shoreline leads to the island’s famous Natural Bridge.

Laxmanpur is a short ride from the jetty and is usually visited in the late afternoon. This guide covers what to see and do, an honest note on swimming, the two sections of the beach, the best time, how to reach it and how to plan your evening. If you would rather have the transfers and timing arranged for you, explore our Andaman tour packages, planned by Andaman Emerald Travels, a travel team based in the Andamans.

About Laxmanpur Beach

Laxmanpur is a broad, open beach covered in pale shell sand, with shallow water that stays clear for a long way out. Dead coral and rocks are scattered along the shoreline, and a few old trees lie fallen on the sand, slowly being washed away by the waves, which gives the beach a quiet, timeless look. There is almost nothing built here, only a few small stalls near the entrance, so the main attraction is the view.

The beach is split into two sections. Beach 1 is the sunset beach, with the best views as the sun sinks into the sea. Beach 2, a short distance along the coast, is where the Natural Bridge sits, and it is best visited at low tide. The two are close enough to walk between, so many visitors see both in one outing.

Important Note on Swimming

Although the water looks clear and inviting, swimming at Laxmanpur is generally not recommended. The seabed has sharp coral and rocks, and the currents can change. A few sources suggest that experienced swimmers can use the beach at high tide, but the safest approach is to enjoy it from the shore, keep children away from the water’s edge and swim at Bharatpur Beach instead, where the water is calmer and activities are supervised.

Things to Do at Laxmanpur Beach

Watch the Sunset

The sunset is the reason to come. The sky shifts through gold, orange and pink as the sun drops, and the fallen trees and rocks make strong silhouettes. Many travellers call it the best sunset on Neil, and it compares well with Radhanagar Beach on Havelock, with far fewer people. Arrive about an hour before sunset to settle in, and stay until the colours fade.

Walk the Shoreline

The long, open shore is ideal for a slow walk, with the water swirling around your ankles in the shallows. Wear shoes or sandals with good grip, as there are shells, rocks and dead coral along the way.

Visit the Natural Bridge

At Beach 2, the Natural Bridge, locally called the Howrah Bridge, is a coral rock arch worth the short walk. It can only be reached comfortably at low tide, so check the tide timings and plan your visit before the sunset. Guides are often available nearby to help you across the rocks.

Photography

The soft light, the fallen trees and the open sky are ideal for photographs, and the beach is popular for a pre-wedding shoot in Andaman. Be considerate of other visitors, and avoid blocking the best viewpoints for long.

Quiet Time and Snacks

Small stalls near the entrance sell fresh coconut, fruit and snacks. Many visitors simply sit on the sand and take in the peace. Facilities are basic, so bring water and a small bag for your waste.

Best Time to Visit Laxmanpur Beach

The best time of day is late afternoon into sunset. The best season is October to May, when skies are clearer and the sea is calm. In the dry season the sun sets early, so check the time for your date. Monsoon months bring rain and cloud that can hide the sunset, and the rocks become slippery.

Months Season What to Expect Our Guides
October to November Post-monsoon Green island; sunsets improving October, November
December to February Peak season Clearest skies and the best sunsets; busiest period December, January, February
March to May Summer Warm and humid; visit just before sunset March, April, May
June to September Monsoon Rain and cloud; sunset often hidden June, July, August, September

How to Reach Laxmanpur Beach

Laxmanpur is roughly 2 to 2.5 km from the Neil Island jetty, a 10 to 15 minute ride along quiet roads. First reach Neil by ferry from Port Blair or from Havelock Island. Autos, cabs, rented bikes and bicycles are all common. If you are on one of our packages, your transfer takes you directly, and we time it for the tide and sunset.

Option Best For Things to Note
Private cab or auto Families and sunset visits Arrange the return pickup before dark
Rented bike Independent travellers Roads are quiet; avoid riding in the dark
Bicycle Slow travellers A pleasant ride in cooler hours

The road back after sunset is dark and has few lights, so arrange a reliable ride in advance.

Visitor Tips for Laxmanpur Beach

  • Check the tide first. Plan the Natural Bridge for low tide, then the sunset.
  • Do not swim. The coral is sharp and the currents change; swim at Bharatpur instead.
  • Wear sturdy sandals or shoes. Shells, rocks and dead coral are common.
  • Arrive an hour before sunset. The light changes quickly.
  • Carry water and mosquito repellent. Insects can be active at dusk.
  • Plan your return. The road is dark after sunset.
  • Do not collect shells or coral. Leave the beach as you found it.
  • Carry your waste out. Help keep the beach clean.
