Sea Plane Ride in Andaman: Latest Status, Planned Routes and Alternatives
A sea plane ride in Andaman is one of the most talked-about future experiences on the islands: a small aircraft that takes off from the water, flies low over reefs and green islands, and lands on the sea next to your destination. Seaplane services have been announced for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but timelines have shifted several times, so please read the status below before you plan your trip around one. For a trip that works whatever the status, we can build your itinerary around our Andaman tour packages, with a confirmed way to reach each island.
This page explains what has been announced, which routes are planned, what the ride is likely to offer and what to book instead today.
Is there a sea plane in Andaman right now?
The short answer is: do not assume so. In March 2026, a seaplane operator, MEHAIR, told the Lieutenant Governor that it had been awarded routes for five sectors and that operations on three of them were expected to start shortly. We have not confirmed a public launch date or open ticket sales, so treat any seaplane flight as unconfirmed until an operator or the administration announces it. Contact us before you plan around it, and we will tell you the current position.
The islands have also had seaplane services before. An earlier service started around 2010 and was later discontinued, so the idea is not new, and past launches have been delayed more than once.
Planned sea plane routes in Andaman
The sectors reported as awarded are:
The first three were described as the sectors likely to begin first, connecting them with Port Blair (now officially named Sri Vijaya Puram). Routes, schedules and start dates can change, so confirm before you book.
What would a sea plane ride in Andaman be like?
- A small amphibious aircraft that lands on water near the island
- A short flight, much faster than the ferry between islands
- Low-level views of reefs, beaches and forest
- Limited seats, so early booking would probably be needed
- Weather-dependent, like other flights and water activities
Fares, baggage limits and age rules have not been confirmed by us, so we do not list a price here. We will update this page when they are announced.
Alternatives to a sea plane ride in Andaman today
- Ferries: government and private ferries connect Port Blair with Havelock and Neil, and they are the most common way to travel between islands.
- Helicopter: scheduled helicopter services connect some islands, though seats are limited and routes change, so ask us for the current options.
- Water activities with a view: if you want an aerial or scenic experience, try parasailing in Andaman for a bird’s-eye view, or a semi submarine ride to see the reef from a dry cabin.
- Adventure on the water: scuba diving in Andaman and jet skiing in Andaman are available now at the main islands, subject to season and sea conditions.

Best time to plan an island trip
November to April usually has the calmest sea and best weather, which also suits seaplane and helicopter operations if they are running. See our guides to Andaman weather in December and Andaman weather in February. From May to October, rough seas and rain can disrupt ferries, flights and water activities.

Tips if you want to take a sea plane in Andaman
- Do not build your whole itinerary around a seaplane flight until services are confirmed.
- Ask us for the latest status before you book flights and hotels.
- Keep a backup, such as a ferry, in case a flight is cancelled.
- Carry a government photo ID, and keep luggage light.
- Book early if seats open, because capacity on small aircraft is limited.
