Kalapathar Beach

Kalapathar Beach is where Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) shows its quiet, dramatic side. On the eastern coast, a long stretch of pale sand is strewn with large black rocks, with turquoise water behind them and forest at your back. The name means “black rock” in Hindi, and the contrast of dark stone, white sand and blue sea makes this one of the most photogenic beaches in the Andamans. It is also the best place on the island to watch the sun rise over the Bay of Bengal.

Kalapathar is less crowded than Radhanagar Beach, and it makes a restful start to a day before the activity beaches fill up. This guide covers what to see and do, the best time of day, how to reach it, safety notes and how to fit it into your Havelock plan. If you would rather have the transfers and timing arranged for you, explore our Andaman tour packages, planned by Andaman Emerald Travels, a travel team based in the Andamans.

About Kalapathar Beach

Kalapathar takes its name from the dark boulders that line parts of its shore. They are smooth, weathered rocks that sit on the sand and in the shallows, and at low tide they create small tide pools worth exploring. Behind the beach, thick forest runs close to the water, and the road to the beach passes resorts and small cafes, giving the whole area a quiet, laid-back feel.

Because it faces east, the beach is at its best in the morning. At sunrise the sky turns gold and pink and the black rocks stand out against the glowing water, which is why photographers love it. By midday the beach is simply calm and pleasant, and by late afternoon it is cooler and quieter, though the sun sets behind you rather than over the sea. For a sunset beach, go to Radhanagar.

Things to Do at Kalapathar Beach

Watch the Sunrise

This is the main reason to visit. Arrive about 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise to find a spot on the sand or on a rock, and let the colours build. It can be busy at sunrise in peak season, but you can find quieter spots by walking a little further along the shore.

Photography

The black rocks, white sand, driftwood and turquoise water give you endless frames, especially in the soft light of early morning. Wide-angle shots work well. If you are planning a shoot, see our guide to a pre-wedding shoot in Andaman, as Kalapathar is a popular location.

Long Beach Walks

The beach is long enough for an unhurried walk, with changing views at each bend. Sandals with good grip help on the rocks, and you can pause to look at tide pools and shells without collecting them.

Swimming

The water is generally calm and swimming is possible in suitable conditions, though the rocks can be sharp and slippery near the shore. Follow any posted signs and staff guidance, stay in safe areas and avoid swimming when the sea is rough.

Quiet Time and Nearby Beaches

Many visitors simply sit under the trees, read and listen to the waves. Vijaynagar Beach, a calm stretch only a short distance away, makes a good second stop. If you want activities such as snorkelling, head to Elephant Beach instead, since the reef there is better set up for it.

Best Time to Visit Kalapathar Beach

The best time of day is early morning for sunrise, or late afternoon when the beach is cooler and quieter. The best season is October to May, when skies are clearer and the sea is calm. Monsoon months bring rain, cloud and rough seas, which can hide the sunrise and make the rocks slippery.

Months Season What to Expect Our Guides
October to November Post-monsoon Green surroundings and improving skies October, November
December to February Peak season Clearest skies and the best sunrises; busiest period December, January, February
March to May Summer Warm and humid; go very early March, April, May
June to September Monsoon Rain and rough seas; sunrise often hidden June, July, August, September

How to Reach Kalapathar Beach

Kalapathar is reached by road from the Havelock jetty. Sources give different distances, from about 6.5 km to 12 km, but the drive usually takes 15 to 25 minutes along well-maintained island roads. First reach Havelock by ferry from Port Blair, then take a taxi, auto or rented scooter. If you are on one of our packages, your private transfer takes you directly, including for an early sunrise visit.

Option Best For Things to Note
Private cab or pre-booked transfer Sunrise visits and families Arrange the pickup the evening before
Auto Short, budget-minded trips Agree the fare, and arrange a return pickup
Rented scooter Confident riders Roads are quiet, but ride carefully, avoid riding in the dark
Local bus or shared jeep Budget travellers Fixed timings; not ideal for sunrise

If you are arriving at dawn, plan your return ride in advance, since few vehicles are available at that hour. You can also reach Havelock from Neil Island, which is a shorter ferry ride.

Suggested Kalapathar Plan

Where to Stay

Several resorts and stays sit near the road to Kalapathar, so staying nearby is a good way to make a sunrise visit easy. Properties here are quieter than those near the jetty, and they suit couples and travellers who want peace. Rooms fill quickly in December and January, so book early.

Visitor Tips for Kalapathar Beach
