Ramnagar Beach is a quiet, forest-backed beach on the south-eastern side of North Andaman, and one of the best-protected Olive Ridley turtle nesting sites in Diglipur. Research on the beach describes a nesting population of more than 300 Olive Ridley turtles each season, with a high rate of successful hatching, and forest staff run a turtle nursery to protect the eggs. Outside the winter nesting season it is a long, calm shoreline with few visitors, a good place to walk, picnic and be alone with the sea.
Ramnagar lies about 35 km from Diglipur town, further than Kalipur, which keeps it very quiet. This guide covers what to see, the turtle nesting season and the rules that protect it, safety points, the best time, how to reach it and how to fit it into a Diglipur plan. If you would rather have the transport and timing arranged for you, explore our Andaman tour packages, planned by Andaman Emerald Travels, a travel team based in the Andamans.

Ramnagar is a long, peaceful beach with sand that visitors describe as white or light, clear blue water and green forest close behind. There are no crowds, no hawkers and no loud music. The beach is maintained by local authorities and the forest department, and a turtle nursery is part of its conservation work. It sits in a part of the island that is far from the main tourist route, which is why so few people come.
Studies of the Andaman beaches have found that Ramnagar has the right slope, sand and surrounding vegetation to suit turtle nesting. It is often described as one of the more undisturbed nesting sites on the north coast. Together with Kalipur Beach, which is closer to town, it makes up the main turtle nesting area of Diglipur. For a similar beach in Mayabunder, see Karmatang Beach.
The beach is best known for Olive Ridley turtles, which come ashore from around December to March to lay their eggs. Research from the 2016 to 2017 season found that more than 300 turtles nested at Ramnagar, with a hatching success rate of at least 75 per cent. Eggs are often moved into a protected nursery on the beach, where forest staff watch over them until the hatchlings emerge and are released.
Advice differs. A tour operator describes the tides as ideal for swimming, but the beach is remote and there is no lifeguard reported. Swim only in calm conditions, in daylight and close to shore. Ask the staff on arrival, and avoid the water at night, in rough weather and in nesting areas. Keep children close.
A slow walk along the quiet shore is the main pleasure. Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light. Keep to the paths, avoid marked nesting areas and do not step on nests.
If the nursery is open and staff are present, ask whether you can look. It is a short, educational stop that shows how nests are protected. Follow all instructions.
The beach is a lovely place for a quiet picnic. Reviews mention a pavilion, washrooms, showers and changing rooms that are separate for men and women, though facilities can change. Bring your own food and water, and carry out your waste.
The curve of the shore, the forest edge and the soft light make this a good place for photographs. Birds are common among the trees.
| Highlight | What It Is | Approx. Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Beach walk | A long, quiet shoreline | 30 to 60 minutes |
| Turtle nesting (seasonal) | Olive Ridley turtles, roughly December to March | Evening or night, with local guidance |
| Turtle nursery | A protected area for eggs and hatchlings | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Picnic and rest | Pavilion and facilities, if open | 30 to 60 minutes |
| Photography and birds | Beach, forest edge and soft light | 30 to 45 minutes |
Timings are approximate and vary with the tide, season and local rules.
The best season is November to April, when the weather is dry and the sea is calm. For turtles, aim for December to March. Outside the season the beach is very quiet and pleasant, but turtles are rare. Monsoon months bring heavy rain and rough seas, and the long road can be difficult.
| Months | Season | What to Expect | Our Guides |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to November | Post-monsoon | Green landscapes; early nesting activity possible | October, November |
| December to February | Peak season and turtle nesting | Best weather; turtles may nest or hatch at night | December, January, February |
| March to April | Summer | Warm; late nesting and hatchlings possible | March, April |
| May to September | Monsoon | Heavy rain, rough seas and road disruption | May, June, July, August, September |
Diglipur is around 300 km from Port Blair, so most travellers break the journey into stages. From Diglipur town, Ramnagar is about 35 km away by road, a drive of roughly an hour. Public transport is limited, so a private cab or hired vehicle is the practical choice. If you are on one of our packages, your private cab takes you directly and brings you back, including for an evening turtle visit.
| Option | Best For | Things to Note |
|---|---|---|
| Private cab or pre-booked transfer | Families and groups; turtle season visits | Arrange the return in advance, as roads are dark |
| Taxi from Diglipur | Independent travellers | Agree the fare and waiting time |
| Local bus | Budget travellers | Limited service; check the last bus back |
Convoy times, ferry schedules and rules change, so confirm everything before you travel. Carry valid photo ID.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|

| Midday | Picnic and rest, and a look at the turtle nursery if open |
| Afternoon | Return towards Diglipur; stop at Kalipur Beach or Craggy Island if time allows |
| Another day | Boat trip to Ross and Smith Islands |
